Sagres is the sail training vessel of Portugal’s Navy. The barque was built at the famous Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg Germany. Sagres is a sister ship of the USCGC Eagle (USA), Mircea (Romania), and Gorch Fock (Germany). Sagres was taken as a war prize by the U.S. following World War I before being transferred to service in the Brazilian Navy. Portugal bought the vessel in 1961, when it took on its current name and mission. Sagres sails with Navy cadets who undertake seamanship, navigation, and leadership. In 2010, Sagres sailed more than 35,000 nautical miles during a circumnavigation.
