While most of the words we share are about physical ship parts, "heave to" refers to a maneuver used by sailors in multiple situations. The technique is used to stop the boat or slow it down by adjusting the sails and rudder in a particular way, often used in heavy weather. ⚓

Brush up on your Italian because today we're highl

Brush up on your Italian because today we're highlighting @tourvespucci! Often called "the most beautiful ship in the world," Vespucci features three vertical masts, an auxiliary electric engine, and a bowsprit extending forward at the bow. Named after the famous Italian explorer, the full-rigged ship completed its first training cruise and received its Battle Flag in 1931. The ship has completed 87 training cruises since its first voyage, and has represented Italy and its navy at multiple international events.

Today, Vespucci is the oldest Italian Naval ship still in active service, and is primarily used as a training vessel for Naval Academy cadets. In 2023, the ship began a 2-year world tour, and sailed 49,500 nautical miles, crossed five continents, and visited 33 countries and 53 ports. We can't wait to say ciao to Vespucci and its crew next year at Sail Boston!

There's less than 250 days until America's 250th anniversary, and tall ships have been a part of American history since the very beginning. Even as technology evolved, historians, sailors, and enthusiasts worked to preserve tall ship knowledge for future generations, and one of the most successful efforts has been the Tall Ship Races. Since 1956, the Tall Ships Races have been held annually, bringing together ships from around the world to race, sail, and celebrate maritime heritage.

2026 is fast approaching, but this #ThrowbackThursday we want to look back on Sail Boston 2017!

More than 50 ships paraded into Boston Harbor as part of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, and thousands of visitors enjoyed live entertainment, tall ship tours, and educational programs. We're bringing back this same energy (and more) in July!

It's Wednesday, and that means it's Knot Friday! T

It's Wednesday, and that means it's Knot Friday! Today, we're highlighting the Anchor Hitch or Anchor Bend, also known as the Fisherman’s Hitch or Fisherman’s Bend. This is a great knot to attach an anchor line to an anchor, and is very similar to the Round Turn and Two Half Hitches.

Fun Fact: Though a knot used to attach rope to an object is formally called a "hitch," the name Bend derives from a time when it covered “tied to” and was not restricted to joining two ropes.
