Ardelle was designed and built by owner and captain, NEA National Heritage Fellow and Master Shipwright, Harold Burnham and his family. Named for the Harold’s grandmother, Ardelle is a Pinky Schooner—a type of fishing vessel that developed in Essex from the smaller Chebacco boats in the early nineteenth century. At forty tons, the Ardelle would have been about an average sized Pinky. While smaller than the later types of vessels used in the Gloucester fisheries, Pinkies were known for being well built, extremely seaworthy, and safe.
