In 1958, Gorch Fock was built in the same boatyard, and from the same plans, as her namesake, which was built in 1933 and seized by the Soviet Union following the Second World War. She is named after the pen name of the German maritime author Hans Kinau who had been killed in naval combat during the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The word fock means “foresail” in German.
Gorch Fock has a traditional design and has been equipped over the years with up-to-date safety and navigational equipment. Since her launch in 1958, she has been the training vessel for midshipmen from the Naval Academy at Kiel, her homeport.
She has logged thousands of nautical miles in her twice-yearly voyages and has been instrumental in the training of thousands of cadets.
