The BELEM was built in 1896 for the South Atlantic trade between France and the East Coast of South America and the West Indies, carrying coffee, cocoa and sugar. She was converted into a luxury yacht in 1914 for the Duke of Westminster and, following World War II, was used as a training ship by the Cini Foundation of Venice. In 1980 she was transferred to Paris as a museum ship. After her refitting in 1985 she sailed the following year to New York for the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. BELEM is 190 feet in length and has a steel hull with a wood-clad deck. She carries 12,900 square feet of sail and has a crew of 16 and 48 trainees. Her homeport is currently Nantes, France.
